Hoenn trades the plains for jungle, desert, volcano and a lot of sea. This is where double battles, abilities and natures appear: the pieces that make combat what it is to this day.

With Surf and Dive, the map gains an underwater layer. Emerald, from 2004, joins the two plots and brings the Battle Frontier, a post-game challenge park that is still a reference.
