Johto introduces a hundred new species, Pokémon breeding, held items and an internal clock: there are creatures that only show up at night and events that only happen on certain days of the week. The world starts to have a routine.

When the League is over, the game opens all of Kanto for a second round of eight gyms, up to a final duel on top of a mountain. Crystal, from 2000, adds animated sprites and the option to play as a girl.
